Jay's Fantastic 2018 Wishlist!

As you all know, I have my finger on the pulse of our society. In saying that I must also acknowledge that, often, ignorance is bliss. 2017 was a year to forget for the most part. But being the eternal optimist that I am, I'll share for you my wishes for 2018, should you have nothing better to do but read my brain spillings. So, without further ado...

1. I Want The Return Of Common Decency

I don't care if you're the person who cleans toilets or the President of the United States, unless someone says "please show me your dick!" DON'T show them your dick! Here's some advice: avoid rubbing your erection up against the girl at the photocopy machine! You know...simple common decency. I mean, I'm all for free love and I don't buy this new 2017-era prudishness that states that people shouldn't have sex unless they are in a serious relationship. But consent is mandatory. Always. Every time! And lets face it, if you view members of the opposite sex as things and not persons and want to exercise power over them through your genitalia, you really don't deserve to have genitalia. I say we should have a revival of manners, respect and dignity.

2. I Want An End To Political Brand Loyalty

Why is it that if you believe in low taxes and small government you somehow have to be against abortion, gay marriage and gun control? If I'm in favor of free markets, why do I have to deny human-made climate change? These issues are unrelated, yet our tribalism has overtaken our common sense. This is what has led people to vote for Roy Moore in Alabama. Doesn't matter if he's a child molester, as long as he'll vote the right way? It's what allows people to see past the behavior of Trump and believe his claims of "fake news" every time a new revelation about him hits the media. The left is similarly ridiculous. Can't I believe in public health insurance without also hating Israel? Not to the bullies on the left. Well, screw all of them, I say. Like most people my views can't be put into a nice little box and labeled "liberal" or "conservative". If you're a piece of shit, I'm not going to vote for you.

3. I Want Facts To Come Back In Style

2017 was the year where our society jumped the shark. We officially decided that feelings matter more than facts and that science was racist, sexist and any other "ist" we can say if it confirms realities that don't validate our feelings. The built-up narrative matters more than logic, reason or reality now. This simply has to stop. Science has a lot to say on hot-button topics of the day. It doesn't all validate the prevailing conventional wisdom that is being jammed down our throats. Not only that, but those who spout the conventional wisdom will not tolerate any dissent or discussion. To them, speech is violence. News flash: it's not. It's high time we fight back against the totalitarian bullies among us and be tolerant of opposing views and opinions. Intellectual diversity is essential to a free democracy.

4. I Want Due Process Back

Innocent until proven guilty. One of the foundations of a civilized society. Essential for a free one. I'm a big fan of sections 10 and 11 of the Charter. Especially 11 (d). It's there for a reason. But right now we live in the kind of hysteria that presumes guilt by accusation. For many on the left it's guilt by gender or race. Those that don't see the danger in this either take our freedoms for granted or simply do not value our free society at all. Some of them don't bother to argue that fact.

5. I Want Martin Luther King's Vision

Content of character, not color of skin. Wise words from a great man. Unfortunately, those who would normally fight for such values are now calling them racist. Now you are to be defined by your race, your gender and your sexual orientation. Then you are to be sorted via a matrix of oppression. The words "melting pot" are now considered racist and "colonial", as if bleeding all colors into one is a bad thing. To me, this is the most outrageous thing about 2017. This is your brain. This is your brain on identity politics. Saying that there is something wrong with races mixing is what's racist. Saying that you are defined by your race, gender or sexual orientation, and not your character and actions is what's bigoted. Those who rightly tell us that diversity is strength quite wrongly tell us that we should never draw on that diversity because that would be "appropriation". These people need to be stood up to, fought and defeated by the majority of us who haven't lost all perspective.

6. I Want Our Sense Of Humor Back

Nobody can take a joke anymore. Nobody can laugh at themselves. Nobody can laugh at our society. We've become so wound up, so hyper-sensitive to anything that might be construed as racist, sexist or bigoted that we've lost all sense of humor. Before anyone tells any joke about anything they first must look over their shoulder. Can we not see how dangerous that is? Comedians won't even go near a college campus anymore. Enough of this garbage.

7. I Want The Return Of The Centre

Moderates, rise up! It's time for the return of flexible public policy, solutions through research and debate, and compromise. The extremists among us have had the upper hand for long enough! One day was too long, as far as I'm concerned. Let us bring back diversity of opinion, free expression, tolerance and acceptance. If we don't we are doomed to tyranny. Quite frankly, we are closer to that tyranny today than I ever thought was possible in our society.

There are many other things I'd love to see happen in 2018. But that list should suffice, for now. I wish all of you who suffer through the drivel I write on this blog a happy Christmas, a fun and safe New Year, and a prosperous and healthy 2018!

But that's just the way I see it.

Jay's Helpful Holiday Guide!

It's been a long time since I posted anything to this blog. Probably because in 2017 the world turned mad and I tend to believe that fewer and fewer people of sound mind will absorb the fine words I write. Today, instead of railing against the idiocy and cowardice of the regressive, intersectional left or the morons on the extreme right (the time will come for that very soon) I'll stay more positive. So, in the interests of helping all of you have a great Christmas season, here's my helpful holiday guide for 2017. Enjoy.....

1. Embrace The Holidays!
Yes! I said it. Embrace the holidays. Buy your loved ones lots of presents. Get into the Christmas music. Get your drink on. Put up lights and decorations. You don't have to be a Christian to enjoy Christmas. Christmas is essentially a secular holiday for most of us, anyway. Just dive in and enjoy the Las Vegas of holidays!

2. If Your Friends or Family Members Have a Birthday Around Christmas Give Them Double The Presents!
Don't "combo-gift" them you dirty cheapskate! All you do is make people hate Christmas when you cheap out on their Christmas-time birthdays. Don't. Do. It.

3. Give to Charity!
If the spirit of the season is giving, then give. Give to your loved ones. Give to strangers. Give to the homeless. It feels good and is good for your mental health. It's science!

4. Forget About the Receiving!
My favourite part of the holidays is watching my wonderful wife open the presents that she gets from me, Santa, Mrs. Claus, the cats.....I know I'll get presents too, but I look forward much more to her reactions to her gifts. Christmas is a great way to emphasize what you should be doing all year, which is putting your spouse first and yourself second!

5. Give Your Pets Christmas Presents!
Your dog, cat, hamster, guinea pig or bunny are not just pets. They are family members. You should treat them as such all year round. That means buying them Christmas presents! Maybe you think that's silly. If so, embrace the silliness! It's Christmas ya Grinch! Shape up! Rex wants in on the fun too!

6. Don't Get Offended!
If you're offended by baby Jesus then you need help. I'm as atheist as you get. But to me, getting offended by Jesus or religious Christmas carols is as silly as getting offended by Greek mythology. If you don't believe it's real, like me, then just have fun with the myth. In this age of hypersensitivity, we all need to harden the fuck up a little.

7. Behave!
Don't get all handsy at the office Christmas party! Don't drink and drive! One thing I love about Christmas is the whole Santa Claus thing. There's an element of accountability to Santa that I really enjoy. You'd better not cry, you'd better not shout, you'd better not pout, I'm telling you why. Why? Because if you're a whiny brat you're supposed to get coal for Christmas. So don't be an asshole this Christmas!

8. Rest!
If you get some time off over the holidays, don't just eat and drink your face off. Nap. Siesta! Get your workouts and exercise in! And for the love of all that's good DO overseleep. Come back to work in January with a bright attitude.

See you in 2018! That's when I'll bitch about the extremist lefties and righties who have seemingly taken over our society. In 2018, we're taking back from the loonies!

But that's just the way I see it!

Merry Christmas!

Your Guide to That Trump Supporter You Know

I think that all of us now know somebody that supports Donald Trump who we consider too intelligent for such nonsense. Well, friends, stop right there and listen up! Just because your friend/family member/co-worker is a Trumpian doesn't mean that he or she is an idiot or a racist. Read on to learn from your personal guru, Jay!

The first thing you need to know is that the more you insult them, call them racist or call them stupid the more they will stick with Trump. Like glue. Yes, it's stubborn, yes it's to spite you.

The second thing you need to know is that not everyone who voted for Trump is sticking with him. His numbers are the worst of any President at this point in their first term and the only thing less popular is Congress.

The third thing you need to know is that Trumpians are loving how angry Trump makes you. It's trolling and it's just a wind-up, but they love it. The more shocked and angry you get, the more they love Trump.

The fourth and final thing you need to know about Trump supporters is that they don't care how hypocritical it makes them look. They don't care that they may be an evangelical on one hand and support a guy who bragged about grabbing them by the pussy. They don't care that if a Democrat said 1/10th of the things Trump does they would despise him. They don't care that it doesn't jive to talk about law and order and then encourage cops to police brutality. They don't care that they talk of making America Great again and they support a guy who gave top secret intel to Russia right in the Oval Office! They don't care.

So why do your Trumpian friends behave this way?

There are a few factors at play here. We all need to get over the idea that Trump supporters are all racists. They aren't. They may well come to be embarrassed in the extreme when all is said and done and history is written, but their support of Trump is, in most cases driven by feelings of alienation and not belonging. To them it's what Trump represents that matters. To you Trump represents egotism, racism and authoritarianism. To them Trump represents border security, fair trade deals, military strength, victory against terrorism, and an end to excessive political correctness. None of that may be reality, but these people feel like Trump speaks for them. They're sick and tired of oppressive political correctness. They sick of ceding ground on foreign policy. They're shocked by the inability of politicians to even mention the term "radical islamic terrorism". And they're angry over being told that they are racist or stupid because they don't live in New York or L.A. Trump is a disgusting person whose solutions don't make sense and who plays on the worst fears and instincts of people. And yes, Trumpians should be ashamed of what they're enabling and turning a blind eye to. Chances are many will, in the future, be ashamed of their support of Trump. But right now, in the moment, they feel justified and entitled to give that support because they feel insulted, disparaged and marginalized.

In some ways Trump is the inevitable backlash (no, not whitelash) against the lows and excesses of modern liberalism. Take a look at the modern college campus for all the fuel you need to drive people into the arms of a Trump. Try telling an unemployed coal miner from Pennsylvania that he has to check his white, male privilege. Intersectional theory represents the worst that the left offers in western society. It is at its core a conspiracy theory and it separates people rather than unites them. It's created the oppression olympics and has given people on the left the feeling that they have free license to stifle free speech and engage in violent protests. Telling people that their views don't matter because their experience isn't the same as yours is rubbish. Saying everyone with the same skin color or gender has the same experience is ignorant and being a leftist doesn't give you a pass on that. The more it happens, the more Trumpians stick with Trump.

We should not forget the failings of past Presidents, Republican and Democrat. The North Korea problem is one that past administrations dithered over. ISIL wouldn't exist without the Iraq invasion. And Obama's red lines meant nothing and that made America look weak. It emboldened Russia, who Obama did very little about. Trump supporters see him as tough on all of these issues, even if he's really just reckless. The more you say he's an idiot, the more the Trumpians stick with Trump.

Trump, without a doubt, plays the racist card. His reaction to Charlottesville shows that quite clearly. Equating Nazis with those who protest Nazis is pandering to white supremacists, pure and simple. There is no moral equivalency there. But take a look at what just happened at Berkeley. Not bothering to be honest about the actions of antifa drives Trumpians closer to Trump. When Black Lives Matter says that cops aren't welcome at a pride parade, Trumpians stick with trump. When pride organizers say Jews aren't welcome, Trumpians stick with Trump. When the right behaves in a racist way people rightly condemn them. When the left behaves racist and the media doesn't cover it, Trumpians stick with Trump.

Pardoning Sheriff Arpaio was a disgusting act of pure cynical theatre. The man was convicted of abuse of power. He illegally targeted immigrants. He conducted illegal investigations against his opponents. He refused to investigate sexual assaults. He was, in every way a racist vigilante and the facts of the matter are so clear that there is no excuse for pardoning him. But when Trump's supporters want border security it doesn't make them racist. It's not racist to believe that illegal immigrants are first and foremost illegal. It's not racist to believe that people should come into your country legally or be thrown out. It may not be a practical policy considering how many illegals are in the US, but it's not racist. But the more you call Trumpians racist the more they stick with Trump.

I could go on and on, but I'll leave you with this final thought: they're going to lose, big. I don't just mean elections. Do you believe that those Bernie Sanders supporters that gave Trump the election by taking their bat and ball and going home will stay home again? They won't. The numbers just aren't there for Trump or the GOP in Congress. Congress may well throw themselves a life preserver by impeaching Trump, but right now they are unpopular because they haven't done anything, about Trump or anything else.

History is not going to be kind to Trump or his supporters. This is a man who bragged about sexual assault, made fun of a disabled reporter, and disparaged the electoral college on Twitter until the electoral college suited him. He has called the free press the enemy. He has threatened to jail his opponent. The FBI investigates him so he fires the head of the FBI. A special prosecutor is investigating him and his campaign for collusion with the Russians and he has publicly mused about firing him too! If there's nothing to find then why would he even consider it?

Your Trump supporter friends, family and co-workers are very soon to be the most ashamed and embarrassed people of the last 50 years. But not understanding why they stick with him is half of the problem with the left.

But that's just the way I see it.

Alberta's Fiscal Reckoning Will Come....Soon

Those of you who read the drivel I write on this site will know that it has been about 8 months since I've written anything. Well, sometimes you need a break to recharge and rebuild your arsenal of topics to write about. So, I'm back and today I'd like to delight you with some facts about how shitty Alberta's financial position is, and why you can expect it to get worse before it gets better.

This morning Alberta had it's credit rating downgraded (again) to double "A" by DBRS. Not only was the running of continuous deficits cited as a reason, but so was the complete lack of a plan to return Alberta's budget to balance. So let's look at where we are here in God's country:

In the last budget tabled by Alberta's NDP government they forecasted a $10 Billion deficit. That's just in their operations. The capital borrowing is on top of that (a sad practise held over from the Redford Tories). It gets better, though. That budget forecasted that oil would average $55/barrel throughout the fiscal year. Oil has yet to rise to $55 in the first 4 months of the fiscal year. The highest it has been is $53 and that was only for a week. Oil has spent most of this fiscal year well under $50 a barrel. For every dollar that oil averages below the government's forecast the government loses $310 million in revenue.

The NDP's forecast for oil for the next two years is $59 and $68. This is pure fantasy. Nothing in the market should lead anyone to believe that oil will rise to those levels during the next two years. There is a severe excess of supply in the market and more supply is coming on line all the time. Furthermore, there are wells in the US that aren't online and are expected to be in the next two years. No, my friends, oil is going to cheap for a long time.

That $10 Billion deficit starts to look a lot more like a $14 Billion deficit when reality sets in. Additionally, in the next two years the NDP believes that its deficits will be $9.7 Billion and $7.2 Billion respectively. That's with the expectation of rising oil prices. The NDP also plans to spend about $25 Billion on capital over the next 3 years, much of which is not included in their operational expense. $16 Billion will be borrowed.

The accumulated debt is forecast to hot $45 Billion at the end of this fiscal year. This becomes worse if they miss their revenue targets, which is a certainty. The NDP forecasts that the debt will rise to over $71 Billion by 2019-20...again, if they hit their targets (they won't).

As interest rates rise Alberta's debt servicing costs will also rise. They have budgeted for $1.7 Billion this year alone. It doesn't get better in the future.

Perhaps they believe that Alberta's economy will just grow them out of it. Again, this is fantasy. Their own economic outlook forecasts real GDP growth of 2.6% this year and 2.2% next year. Not exactly robust. Perhaps the long awaited economic diversification will finally come to Alberta. Maybe investors and businesspeople will look past the increases in taxes that have hit Alberta under the NDP. Maybe they'll choose Alberta over the about to be lower taxed US out of the goodness of their hearts.

Yet the spending announcements just keep on rolling along. But at some point the rubber hits the road, so to speak. The cuts will come. Either the NDP will do it or they will lose the election in 2019 and their successors will.

Work in education, post-secondary, health or in the public service? Brace for impact.

But that's just the way I see it.
